What to Bring to Your Notary Appointment

What to Bring to Your Notary Appointment

Getting your documents notarized is a simple process—but coming prepared can make your appointment quick and stress-free.

Here’s what you’ll need to have ready before your notary arrives.

1. A Valid, Government-Issued ID

All signers must present an acceptable form of identification. In California, this typically includes:

  • Driver’s license or state ID

  • U.S. passport

  • Other government-issued ID that is current or issued within the last 5 years

The name on your ID should match the name on your documents as closely as possible.

2. Your Documents (Complete and Ready to Sign)

Make sure all documents are prepared before your appointment.

  • Do not sign the documents in advance

  • The notary must witness your signature

  • Fill out all required sections (except signature areas)

If you’re unsure about anything in your documents, it’s best to clarify with the document preparer beforehand.

3. All Required Signers Present

Everyone who needs to sign the document must be present at the time of notarization.

Each signer must:

  • Be physically present

  • Provide valid identification

  • Be willing and aware of what they are signing

4. Witnesses (If Required)

Some documents require witnesses in addition to notarization.

  • Confirm ahead of time if witnesses are needed

  • In California, the notary cannot always act as a witness

  • Witnesses must also bring valid ID

If you’re unsure, I’m happy to guide you before your appointment.

5. A Clear Signing Space

Have a clean, well-lit space ready for signing. This helps ensure documents are completed accurately and efficiently.
