California Notary Fees Are Increasing in 2027: What You Need to Know

Big news for California notaries and the communities we serve! Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Assembly Bill 1597 (AB 1597) into law, increasing California's maximum statutory notary fees beginning January 1, 2027.

What Is Changing?

Starting January 1, 2027, California's maximum notarial fees will increase as follows:

  • Acknowledgments: From $15 to $20 per notarized signature

  • Jurats (oaths and affirmations): From $15 to $20 per notarized signature

  • Certain deposition services: From $30 to $35

This marks the first increase to California's notary fees in nearly a decade and recognizes the rising costs of operating a notary business, including transportation, insurance, supplies, education, and technology.

Why This Matters

Notaries play an important role in helping prevent fraud and ensuring that important documents are properly executed. From estate planning documents and powers of attorney to real estate and healthcare forms, notaries provide an essential service to individuals, families, businesses, and communities across California.

The fee increase helps support notaries in continuing to provide professional, reliable, and accessible services while keeping pace with the increased costs of doing business.

What This Means for Clients

For most clients, the change will be minimal. For example:

  • One notarized signature will increase by $5.

  • Two notarized signatures will increase by $10.

Even with this adjustment, notarization remains one of the most affordable ways to protect against fraud and ensure important documents are signed properly.
